Meet Ruby: Our New Highland Cow and Fall Festival Star!

If you’ve followed our journey here at Whitetail Tree Farm in Indiana, you already know our Highland cattle adventure began with two unforgettable characters: Bonnie and Clyde. These shaggy twins came from Remarkable Ranch and quickly became the heart of our small herd of Highland cows.

Clyde has a big personality — and by big, we mean he’s a total brat. 😄 Bonnie, on the other hand, is a sweetheart. Together, they completely changed how we felt about raising cattle. We had previously bred Black Angus, who (let’s be honest) tend to be a little bratty themselves. But Highland cows? Their gentle temperament, fuzzy coats, and quirky personalities won us over fast.

While Bonnie and Clyde are adorable, they can’t have babies — not just because they’re siblings, but also because Bonnie is a freemartin, meaning she’s infertile. This is common in twin births with male and female calves, with about a 95% chance the female will be unable to reproduce.
And that’s exactly why we’ve added a new Highland cow to our herd — Ruby. 💕
Ruby joined us recently from Aaron and Leslie Hickman at Circle H Cattle Co. She’s a little shy right now, but we’re confident she’ll warm up as she gets to know everyone (and gets a few extra snacks along the way). Our goal is to eventually breed Ruby with Clyde — though Bonnie is definitely a little jealous of all the attention Ruby’s getting already.

We’re also planning to add one more Highland cow before the Pumpkin Harvest Festival this fall — so stay tuned for another exciting announcement soon!
You can meet Ruby (and our next Highland cow!) in person at our Pumpkin Harvest Festival on September 13th right here at Whitetail Tree Farm near Muncie, Indiana. With pumpkins, zinnias, sunflowers, gem mining, photo ops, and friendly farm animals, it’s a fall event you won’t want to miss.
We can’t wait for you to visit and snap a selfie with Ruby — the newest member of our growing Highland cattle family. She may be new here… but she’s already right at home. 🤎
